Barangay Sampaguita is in the Municipality of Mabini. It is just a few hundred meters
away from the Poblacion or Town Proper. It was originally known as "Sitio Makokak" of P.
Niogan (one of the oldest barangays in Mabini). She became one of the thirty-four (34)
barangays in Mabini by the Revised Administration Code of the Barrio Chapter, Republic
Act 3590 on January 1960. The former Municipal Mayor Rafael P. Amurao (the late father
of the ex-mayor Ruben P. Amurao) name it after our natuional flower, SAMPAGUITA. Since
that time, the Barangay Sampaguita came into existence.
It has a total land area of 101.1890 square meters or 96.4778 hectares. Barangay
Poblacion bound it in the east, in the south by the Sta. Mesa and P. Balibaguhan, in the
west by Sta. Ana and in the north by P. Niogan and Anilao.
Barangay Sampaguita has ruggedland surface o invariably different level. it ios most
planted by fruit bearing trees with patches of rice and corn plants, root crops,
vegetables and flowering shrubs especially sampaguita flowers which are used during the
Flores de Mayo. The rest are either "idle grounds" or residential lots. Most of the
houses are located along or nearly along the road. It has a total of 245 houses, as of
2001, Barangay Sampaguita has a total population of 1,298 inhabitants. Two thirds of
them are permanent residents and about one third of which came from Metro Manila areas
who are inhabitants of the barangay but are working outside the locality and tus
spending weekends or holidays in the barangay.
The people of Sampaguita are industrious and religious. Although most of them are
originally poor, they have risen from the soil of poverty through determination, hard
work and the ambition to improve their way of life. Now, a good number of them are
professionals and many have attained considerable success and became somebody in their
respective fields by finding job placements here in the Philippines and other countries.
Thus, most of the families who have their relatives working in other countries enjoy a
luxurious way of life.
Sampaguita is predominantly Catholic, speaks the national language and law-abiding
citizens of the Republic of the Philippines. One of the good traits of a native
Sampaguita is being hospitable to visitors or friends who come for a visit. Yet poor,
they are always reaady with a warm smile and a merienda for their visitors.
Barangay Sampaguita has two important contributions to the Municipality of Mabini.
First, it is where the Mabini Catholic Cemetery is located. The two brothers named Tomas
and Esteban Castillo donated the Mabini Catholic Cemetery. Lately, Saint Peter Memorial
Park was also established in our barangay, which is a private memorial park owned by the
late Engr. Pedro B. Panganiban and Mrs. Lerma M. Panganiban. The 1st day of November is
the most busy day of the year for the whole Barangay as athe majority of the people of
Mabini come to the cemetery to visit and bring flowers to the tomb of their loved ones
in celebration of the All Saints Day.
Another contribution of Barangay Sampaguita to our mujicipality is the Local Water
District. It is the source of potable water, pipe - supplying other adjacent barangays
and Poblacion Proper.
Aside from these, Barangay Sanpaguita has a Day Care Center that also serves as the
voting center during the election time.
