The Mabini became a town in 1918, it was composed of eleven barrios and the whole of
Maricaban Island. One of the original barrios is Saguing. The place was so called
because saguing or banana is in abundance in this locality.
Saguing was one of the biggest of the municipality being composed of six sitios namely
Rizal II, Balanga, Gasang, Pilahan, Sili and Duhata. This barrio was formerly bounded by
Malimatoc on the west. Talaga on the east and north and on the south by the sea.
From 1926, Saguing was under the leadership of the first appoined barrio lieutenant,
Florentino Camongol. He was followed by Jorge Camongol, then by Teofilo Villanueva and
lastly by Jorge Aspi. In 1960, the first barrio elected was held, and Leon Garcia became
the fisrt elected barrio lieutenant. He was succeeded by Juanito Panopio when the latter
won in the 1964 election. In 1968, Leon Garcia acquired again the position, but
unfortunatelyhe was not able to finish his term because he died in 1970. Guillermo
Atienza being the number one barrio councilmen continued his term and later was elected
barrio captain in the 1972 election. The elected councilmen in this election were
Epifanio Castillo, Gregorio Calangi, Pedro Aldueza, Pedro Austria, Juan Austria and
Victor Buenviaje.
As years passed by, the income and populationof the four sitios-Pilahan, Duhatan, Sili
and Gasang increased and the feeling of independence among then was felt. As such, so
they filed petitions to be regular barrios. The petition was granted and at the present
those four sitios are now independent barrios with Duhatan renamed as Laurel, and Sili
as Sto. Tomas and the other too sitios with their same name.
Saguing now, is bounded by Gasang on the west, Talaga on the east, Estrella on the north
and by the sea on the south. Its jurisdiction covers the two sitios, Rizal II and
Balanga.
The barrio constituents are more or less 600 people. Their main source of living are
fishing, farming, cattle raising and weaving. Those who are lucky enough to pursue and
finish their studies are now exercising their profession which then is a pride of the
barrio.
The chief products of the barrio are "ikmo", bananas, atis, coffee, mango and
vegetables.
