Pilahan, a newly created barrio of the Municipality of Mabini, was formerly a part of
Saguing. This barrio was created through the petition of the majority of voters of the
sitio in accordance with Article 2, Section 3 of Republic Act No. 3590, otherwise known
as the Revised Barrio Charter and by virtue of Resolution No. 97, s. 71, dated December
6, 1971, passed and unanimously approved by the Muicipal Council of Mabini.
The place is so-called Pilahan, because the soil there is somewhat rocky which people
call "Pila". Later on, the inhabitants named the locality Pilahan meaning the "Land of
Pila".
Pilahan lies between the barrios of Sto. Tomas and Estrella. It is bounded on the north
by Saguing, on the southeast by Estrella, and on the west by Sto. Tomas. A landlocked
barrio with an area of more or less 450,000 square meters has a total populatin of about
500.
The living coditions of the entire residents are greatly affected by the geographical
feature of the place. The agricultural area is limited due to poor soil. Only a little
portion of the land is productive. This poor condition forces the people to migrate to
other places especially during harvest season.
The original inhabitants of the place are families of Reyes and Calangi.
Majority of the people in the barrio are engaged in raising cattles and other animals.
Other utilizes the land which is suitable to the growth of crops. They raise a little
rice, corn, cassava, coconuts, and babanas.
Most of the women weave sinamay and embroider them.
Pilahan is gradually developing through the financial aid of the local government to
develop its natural resources, particularly spring development under the leadership of
the barriocaptain Zacarias Maranan and his councilmen namely: Ceferino Villanueva, Petra
Magtibay, Rufino Rodillas, Aquilino Calangi, Victor Calangi and Lorenzo Bantugon.
Through the leadership of their present Punong Barangay, Hon. Ruben Villanueva, the said
barangay continue to develop and improve the quality of living for its people.
